Each A-series step changes the linear scale by ×√2 ≈ 1.41. Two steps = ×2 exactly. "Standard scale" indicates the result is within 0.5% of a common architectural drawing scale.

FAQs

What size is A1 paper?

A1 is 594 × 841mm. A0 is 841 × 1189mm, A2 is 420 × 594mm, A3 is 297 × 420mm and A4 is 210 × 297mm.

How do the A sizes relate to each other?

Each size is half the one before it, cut across the long side, so the proportions stay the same at 1:√2. A0 has an area of one square metre.

What happens to scale when I print an A1 drawing on A3?

A3 is half the width and height of A1, so the drawing prints at half size and the scale halves too. A 1:100 drawing becomes 1:200, and should be labelled that way.

What are B sizes used for?

B sizes sit between the A sizes, for example B1 at 707 × 1000mm. They are mainly used for posters and printing where an A size is too small or too large.
