FAQs
What is the minimum size for an accessible WC?
+
Approved Document M Volume 2 Diagram 18 shows a unisex wheelchair-accessible WC at 1500mm wide by 2200mm deep. That gives room for a side transfer and a 1500mm turning space.
How far from the wall should the WC be?
+
Approved Document M Diagram 18 places the WC pan centreline 500mm from the adjacent wall, leaving the transfer space on the open side.
What heights do the fittings go at?
+
The WC seat is at 480mm, horizontal grab rails and the drop-down rail at 680mm, and the washbasin rim at 720 to 740mm above the finished floor. The alarm pull cord has red bangles at 100mm and between 800 and 1000mm.
Which way should the door open?
+
Outwards, so a person who falls inside doesn't block it. Approved Document M also asks for a horizontal closing bar on the inside face of the door.
Is 'DDA WC' still the right term?
+
The Disability Discrimination Act was replaced by the Equality Act 2010, but 'DDA WC' is still widely used. The design guidance itself comes from Approved Document M and BS 8300.
